THREE EXERCISES YOU MUST DO TO GET IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
  • Strength Training – Nothing too intimidating, but just 20 minutes of basic exercises two days a week will help firm and tone the whole body. Strength training will modestly increase metabolism, helping to burn more calories — even at rest. Start any strength-training program with one set of exercises and a weight that allows the completion of eight to 12 repetitions. Any program should exercise the major muscle groups of the lower body, torso, and upper body. Special attention should also be given to strengthening the core muscles and lower back to help enhance individuals’ functional capabilities for safely engaging in various summer recreational activities.
  • Interval Training - Interval training involves alternating short bursts of intense activity with what is called active recovery, which is typically a less-intense form of the original activity.  Interval training might involve the run walk method where a person runs for 4 minutes, then walks for 2 minutes for the duration of the workout.   It is an extremely time-efficient and productive way to exercise.
  • Cardio/Aerobic Exercise – Aerobic exercise is any activity that uses large muscle groups in a continuous, rhythmic fashion for sustained periods of time.  To lose weight, gradually work towards accumulating 60 minutes or more of low – to moderate – intensity physical activity on most days of the week.”

Quick and Practical Life & Fitness Tips

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

(1) Take a stroll before dinner – research shows that it will inspire you to make healthier food choices.

(2) Create a money club.  You may already be a part of a book club, but have you ever thought of creating or joining a money club.  Each meeting the group focuses on finances with topics ranging from budgeting, money saving tips and debt reduction.

(3) Have a mantra.  Choose and uplifting and inspiring phrase and say it to yourself repeatedly, when you are feeling down and out.
(4) Keep a food journal. A food diary creates a conscious awareness of food intake and eating patterns – helping us lose weight.

(5) Feeling anxious? Take Inositol -a B vitamin. A study found that people who boost their intake of inositol feel less anxious almost immediately.

(6) Choose real, whole foods over processed fake ones. We are what we eat.  Do you really want to be a big sloppy greasy burger.

(7) Exercise. The simply act of exercise itself can make you feel better about how you look.

(8) Eat more fruits and vegetables.  They are packed with nutrients that may lower your blood pressure.

(9) Have at least one vegetarian meal a week.  Replacing one meat meal with a vegetarian meal will save you money and make you more environmentally friendly, because meat has a large carbon foot print.

(10) Take a “siesta.” A power nap (those less than 30 minutes) helps ward off fatigue.

How Long Will It Take Me To Get Into Shape?

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

What’s up ya’ll?  This is Jackie O., the First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun checking in! This week I am answering the question, “How long will it take me to get into shape?”  I’m sure that you are not surprised that I get asked this question ALOT!  The most honest reply is that it varies. Fitness is  journey that occurs day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year. It requires dedication and persistence. It is not just about working out, it is also about what and how much you eat. Without a proper diet, you may find your hours of hard-work in the gym futile.  The average person may start seeing results in as little as 6 weeks if they are exercising 4-5 times per week and sticking to a healthy diet.
