Get rid of clutter tips from Pittsburgh personal trainer, life coach, and Independent Beachbody Coach, Jackie Omotalade, The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun:

Declutter your life! Declutter your home! Most of us have clutter and most of us don’t know how to get rid of clutter! Getting rid of clutter can be overwhelming. Its hard to know where to begin. In fact, you may not even notice clutter until its out of control.

As a life coach, I have helped people discover who they are and what they want most out of life. In this article, I am going to guide you so that you can get rid of clutter!

You will need garbage bags and/or cardboard boxes.  Label one “trash,” one “sell” and one “donations.”  Label a smaller cardboard box “rags” which you can use for cleaning.  You will also need ziploc bags to store single items or for small items.  Masking tape and a waterproof marker are also needed.

Do a walk through of your home! Start with the rooms you are in the most like your bedroom, bathroom, and living room.  As you begin to declutter your home, keep these three things in mind:

  1. Does the item weigh you down? Does it have a negative memory associated with it? Does it make you feel sad or angry? If yes, throw it away, give it away, sell it or donate it! IT IS TIME TO MOVE ON!
  2. Does the item just sit there and contribute nothing positive to your life?  Is it just taking up room? If the item does not move you forward, it is time to get rid of it!
  3. If you agonize over the item for too long, it is time to get rid of it!

Other important factors to consider are: Do you really love the item, Do you need it now? Will someone in your family need it in the future? If you can’t answer yes, it is time for the item to go.

As you do your walk-through, begin to purge items.  If you haven’t worn an outfit in over a year, it is time to sell it or donate it to the Goodwill! You should do the same with unworn or broken jewelry.

Check the dates on medication and if they are past the expiration dates – throw them away!  Make-up that is over a year old, should also be thrown away.   Some makeup, especially gels and liquids can develop bacteria after being exposed to air, so it is important throw away make-up after a year.

Clear tables and surfaces of everything, but the most essential items!

Place items in one of the three labeled containers and seal them up! Take them to the thrift store, consignment store, or to the garbage can!

Follow these decluttering tips and you are sure to declutter your life and declutter your home!
