Personally, I love quilts and I love the art of quilt-making. Quilts tell stories. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the Soulful Stitching exhibition at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. The exhibition featured the works of Siddis women. I had the pleasure of learning their stories. Siddis are Indians of African descent. Some are descendants of African slaves and others African merchants and traders. Most live in the northwest, south, central and western parts of India. The quilts are a combination of the Indian quilting tradition with the African textile tradition. I love seeing how various cultures of the world are connected and this exhibition was a beautiful example of the seamless merging on two distinct and breathtaking cultures – African and Asian. Each quilt was accompanied by a photo of the woman who created it and a brief description of her quilt’s story. I have a quilt over my bed in my room, which I had an artist named Kathleen make a quilt from my daughters’ clothing. It is a beautiful tribute to her memory. I’m also a lover of batik and textile, so I have a quilt [...]

Dancing is just about one of the best workouts out there! Its fun and its a fantastic way to get a great cardio-workout! Carnaval is all about music and dance AND I LOVE both music and dance. I’m not a great dancer nor am I a musician, but that does not stop me from getting out there with the best of them and shaking and gyrating, because its JUST FUN! Carnaval San Francisco 2011 took place in my backyard (literally), so I couldn’t help but attend, but no matter where it would have been in the city, I would have made the trek. The annual event held the last weekend in May dates back to the late 1970s when a group of artists and dancers in the Mission District decided to organize a Carnaval San Francisco to showcase the multi-cultu Advice from Pittsburgh and San Francisco Personal Trainer and Stylist Jackie O. – The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun. She is a personal trainer and stylist who splits her time between Pittsburgh, PA and San Francisco, California. She is passionate about fitness, fashion and fun. Jackie O. is on a mission to help individuals “create the change they [...]

Mrs Beyonce truly brought it during the Billboard Music Awards with her stunning performance of “Who Runs the World.” Her energy is amazing and that is why her new song “Who Runs the World” has become one of my favorite workout tunes. It speaks to millions of women and tells them that they can and do run this motherf*cka! And I thank her for that, because when my clients are at their last set of push-ups sometimes they need that musical voice to tell them – YOU GOT THIS! And Mrs Jay-Z certainly does “got this!” She has been bringing the energy and powerful dance moves into our lives for over 15 years. She has had millions of us shaking our bodies to her music and when we shake and gyrate we burn calories and when we burn calories and eat a healthy diet we LOOSE weight. So all the single ladies and not so single ladies, keep moving your body with Mrs B.!
