Dog Health Issues: Hot Doggy! Dog Safety in Warm Weather
If you live in a climate that has sticky, hot, summer days, you may find yourself longing for cooler days. Your cat will definitely agree! In warm weather, it is necessary for you to care for your dog so that he or she does not become overheated and develop heat issues. Remember, a pet is like a newborn baby—your dog cannot tell you that he or she is hot or uncomfortable or developing health issues. You have to notice warning signs that your cat is developing health issues and provide a good living environment so that your cat does not get too hot.
When you take your pet places during the summer, never ever let your dog inside of a parked car, even for a short time. Cars quickly become ovens in the summertime, even when you park in the shade, or even if you have the windows cracked. Your pet will not be able to alert people in order to get out of your car safely and can develop dog health issues. In as little as ten to fifteen minutes, your pet could die from the heat in a parked car, and parking in the shade does little good to prevent this, since the sun continuously moves and the heat of the air alone will be bad for your pet. If your pet will be going with you, make sure that cats are allowed wherever you will be.
When the heat index is high, keep your dogs inside to prevent him/her from developing health issues. Dogs should have a
. The Canine Cooler bed is much more than simply a dog bed- it’s a canine comfort device. Cooling by nature has the therapeutic effect for a dog’s health just like it does for people — it slows, relaxes, and helps treat pain and swelling. The Canine Cooler bed acts as a radiator for your dog. It has tremendous cooling power without refrigeration. It feels like that cold tile floor on your bare feet. It readily absorbs heat from your dog, and loses this heat back to the surrounding air. Your pet enjoys a lasting, dry, and powerful cooling sensation!
Dogs that are not outdoors most of the time won’t know where the cooler places to hide are, or they may find these cooler places and not return home. The Thirsty Dog Portable Pet Water Bowl is a great tool to keep your dog hydrated on the go!

Hot asphalt can also wreak havoc on a dogs’ health, as it can burn his or her sensitive paw pads. If your dog goes outside, make sure that he or she is let back inside after only a few hours on the hottest days of the summer and has a water source outside. Basically, if it is recommended that seniors and children stay inside, it is good for pets to stay indoors as well.
Keep your dog well groomed during the summer as well. Brushing you dog often will help get rid of the excess hair that has been shed and is weighing down the animal. If your dog has very long hair or is overweight, provide him or her with an air-conditioned room if possible. Moderate Protein Intake Plus Exercise Promotes Weight Loss

When learning about healthy eating, one of the most important nutrients is protein. Of course, all nutrients are crucial for our bodies to be as healthy as possible, but without protein in our diets every single day, our bodies will not be as strong as they should be. Protein can be found in a number of food sources, so if you’re interested in eating a healthier diet, you should consider learning more about protein.
Increased protein intake helps people lose weight. We need to eat foods rich in protein every day because, unlike some other nutrients, it cannot be stored in the body. That means that if you eat more protein than necessary, your body will simply cause it to pass through your system. Therefore, you really can’t eat too much protein! However, because protein cannot be stored in the body problems may arise surrounding this nutrient as well. If you don’t get enough protein on any given day, your body has no back-up plan for producing protein on its own or using reserved protein from previous days. Therefore, protein is very important to consider when you are planning your meals.
Essentially, protein builds muscles, which is why you will see bodybuilders especially concerned with protein. When you lift weights to work out, you body makes tiny tears in the muscles. Proteins are then used to repair these healthy tears in the body, building the muscle slightly bigger with every workout. Even if you do not work out, your body’s muscle deteriorates, as you body needs the energy. Muscle provides energy, just like fat. Having protein in the body helps you to rebuild any muscle lost.
Protein also helps a person’s body in other ways, mainly with the maintenance of hormones. Hormones in the body do a number of things, such as regulate organ function, account for stimulation, create metabolism, and affect mood. Proteins are used in the making of some of these different hormones, so if you go more than a day or two without eating foods rich in proteins, your entire body will suffer.
How can you make sure that you re getting enough proteins? Simply put, look for foods with protein as a key component on the label. Some great foods to consider include chicken, beef, pork, eggs, and fish, although vegetarians can also get proteins into their diets by eating nuts, beans, soy products, and a variety of other foods. You should have some of these foods in your diet every single day to ensure that you are providing your body with the proteins it needs to stay healthy.
Beware, you can take too much protein! The USDA recommends that proteins make up 15 percent of the total calorie intake! Increasing protein intake to 40% promotes weight loss as well, but high protein intake, can have metabolic side effects such as elevated levels of uric acid. Elevated levels of uric acid increases the risk of heart disease, kidney disorders, and gout.
A recent study found that moderate protein diets (25% of total calories) plus exercise (aerobics and weights) promoted weight loss without the risk associated with high protein intake.
Metabolic Syndrome Treatment: Walking Fights Metabolic Syndrome

Health and Fitness advice from the First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun, Jackie Omotalade, a Pittsburgh personal trainer, lifestyle coach, and Independent Beachbody Coach:
Have you been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome? Metabolic syndrome is a group of disorders linked to heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. Some of the symptoms included abdominal obesity, blood fat disorders — high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol — that foster plaque buildups in artery walls, blood clotting problems, inflammation, elevated blood pressure, and insulin resistance.
The American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommend that the metabolic syndrome be identified as the presence of three or more of these components:
* Elevated waist circumference:
Men — Equal to or greater than 40 inches (102 cm)
Women — Equal to or greater than 35 inches (88 cm)
* Elevated triglycerides:
Equal to or greater than 150 mg/dL
* Reduced HDL (“good”) cholesterol:
Men — Less than 40 mg/dL
Women — Less than 50 mg/dL
* Elevated blood pressure:
Equal to or greater than 130/85 mm Hg
* Elevated fasting glucose:
Equal to or greater than 100 mg/dL
A study conducted by Duke University and published in the American Journal of Cardiology found that walking 30 minutes 6 times per week for 8 months caused a reduction in symptoms of metabolic syndrome in middle aged men and women without changing their diets.
The study involved groups who either ran, jogged, or walked 12 miles per week and a group which did no exercise (control). The study found that people who participated in moderate exercise gained the most benefit from physical activity.
So what are you waiting on? Start walking today!

Lingerie is a term for fashionable and alluring women’s undergarments. It derives from the French word linge, “washables” – as in faire le linge, “do the laundry” – and ultimately from lin for washable linen, the fabric from which European undergarments were made before the general introduction of cotton from Egypt and then from India.

Amazon Kindle – Electronic Book Reader

October, 2008, I am watching a Tivo’d episode of Oprah and she seems very excited. She is talking about her favorite new gadget, Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
. I am intrigued by her excitement because I usually share her sentiments. She begins to discuss this nifty new toy with its creator, an Amazon employee. Well, soon enough, we find out that it is an electronic reader. She begins to detail all of its wondrous functions….”Oh, you can download books and magazines and even blogs. You can set up an account on Amazon and with a 1 button feature, you can pay for and zap all desired reading materials to Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
in seconds!” I have perked up and am intently taking it all in. You see, I am an avid reader. One of the folks that gets a little sad as I near the final chapters of a book. I LOVE books and all that they stand for. Anyhoo, I am watching and my interest is growing. By the end of the show, one thing is evident….I NEED Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
. And because Oprah is so benevolent, if you order one and type in OPRAH as the promotional code, $50 will be removed from the rather large price tag of $359. Hmmmmm, how to get it, how to get it….
Rewind a few days before the Oprah episode and my husband is asking what I want for my birthday, coming in November. I say that I have no idea but I’ll let him know. Well, AH HA! I have it now! I WANT THE KINDLE! I tell him and he immediately agrees (gotta love him). So, off I go to the Amazon website with his credit card. I am eagerly awaiting the delivery….Come on Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
, Come on Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
.
What’s that? A box on the porch? From Amazon? YIPPEE!!!!!!! I rip it open and undo the packaging and there it is in all of its literary glory….MY KINDLE. Want to hear something cool? When I turn it on, the screen says, “Nicole’s Kindle.” I am ALREADY in love. So, I am looking at all of the buttons and turning it over and checking it out. It is everything Oprah promised.
Now, it’s time to order a book. I go to Amazon.com and peruse Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)
selections. I see one I like and just like Oprah said, the majority of the books (even those hard-backed suckers you’d pay $30 for) are $9.99 or less. I am giddy. I hit the button titled: “One touch ordering” and in seconds, the book’s title appears on the homepage of my Kindle. Oooh, I want to order more. So, I do.
And, I also order samples of books. You see, you can download the first chapter of any book offered in a Kindle edition, for absolutely free, so you can check it out before making the commitment. Love, love, love it.
So, my Kindle and I are together always. I download every one of my monthly book club books to my precious reader and I am loving my new friend. The pages turn by hitting a button on the side (left or right, there is a button on each side). You can mark a page or passage that you want to come back to. I downloaded a book that I have yet to read but it is called something like, “Kindle Secrets–all of the things your Kindle can do that you don’t know about.” The buzz is that you are able to surf the internet and other fun activities. Oh, and don’t let me forget, that there is a way that you can transfer a personal word document to the Kindle so that you could possibly carry around notes for school or work on your Kindle. The possibilities are endless!
Amazon has released a Kindle 2 and I hear it’s doing all kinds of great things for the same $359 price. So, check it out. If you LOVE to read, be sure to grab one or ask for it as a gift. You won’t be sorry!

Weight Loss in the Water: Water Aerobic Exercise
Advice from The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun and Pittsburgh personal trainer, Independent Beachbody Coach, and life coach, Jackie Omotalade:
There are many different ways that you can get healthy – doing water aerobic exercises is a new different, and fun way to burn calories! What many people don’t know is that not only can water aerobics help you be really healthy and get the most out of your aerobic work out, it can do a lot more, as well.
When it comes to using the water to work out, there are many ways that water aerobic exercises can fit into your life. You can either do some of these exercises on your own, or you can join a club or a group that holds water aerobic classes and they will teach you how to do them. No matter what you decide to do, you’ll be able to find that water aerobic exercise fit right in to your regular work out routine.
Basically, doing water aerobic exercises means that you are going to be providing your body with actual exercise. You are going to be doing aerobic work outs in much the same manner that you would if you weren’t in the water – for instance you are going to be able to run, walk, and do other movements during your work out. The difference is that you’ll be doing them in the water, which adds to the work out.
Water aerobic exercise routine can be adjusted to suit your individual needs, restrictions and fitness levels. The advantage of exercising in water is that it offers resistance in all directions as opposed to land exercises where you work only against gravity
By doing your workout in the water, you are getting more resistance than if you were doing it in the air. Everyone knows that when you try to move through water you have to exert more force in order to make the movements that you want to make. This means that as you do your water aerobic exercises, you are forced to use more of your muscle groups and you are forced to get stronger.
Most of the time you can be with a water aerobic exercise class, which will help you figure out how best to do your water aerobic exercise. This is a great way to make sure that you know what you are doing, and to make sure that you are actually getting as much out of your exercise as you can. The instructor will guide the class through a series of movements, where you’ll be able to do the same repetitive motions over and over again. Hopefully, you’ll find that this will increase your heart rate and allow you to be able to start to work your body in a great and aerobic way. By doing water aerobics, you can get exercise and strengthen every part of your body – plus, water aerobic exercise can be the most fun you’ve had in a pool since you were a little kid!
Trans Fat – Do You Know What Foods Not To Eat?

Advice from Pittsburgh personal trainer and life coach, Jackie Omotalade, The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun:
Did you know that according to a recent report, 92 percent of Americans know they should avoid trans fat, but only 21 percent can name three sources?
Trans fat is the common name for a type of unsaturated fat with trans-isomer fatty acid(s). Trans fats may be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated.
In a nutshell, trans fat is made when a manufacturer adds hydrogen to vegetable oil–a process called hydrogenation. Hydrogenation increases the shelf life and flavor stability of foods containing these fats.
Trans fat can be found in vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, cookies, snack foods, and other foods made with or fried in partially hydrogenated oils. Unlike other fats, the majority of trans fat is formed when food manufacturers turn liquid oils into solid fats like shortening and hard margarine. A small amount of trans fat is found naturally, primarily in some animal-based foods.
Trans fat, like saturated fat and dietary cholesterol, raises the LDL cholesterol (Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as “bad” cholesterol) that increases your risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Americans consume on average 4 to 5 times as much saturated fat as trans fat in their diets.
Although saturated fat is the main dietary culprit that raises LDL, trans fat and dietary cholesterol also contribute significantly.
Major Food Sources of Trans Fat for American Adults
(Average Daily Trans Fat Intake is 5.8 Grams or 2.6 Percent of Calories)
40%cakes, cookies, crackers, pies, bread, etc.
21%animal products
17%margarine
8%fried potatoes
5%potato chips, corn chips, popcorn
4%household shortening
3%salad dressing
1%breakfast cereal
1%candy

Advice from The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun and Pittsburgh personal trainer, Independent Beachbody Coach, and life coach, Jackie Omotalade:
Fifty to 80 percent of women end up with morning sickness during pregnancy. Are you looking for a morning sickness cure? Or a cure for nausea? Does the thought of getting into a car make you cringe? Are you looking for a motion sickness bracelet or motion sickness bands?
No one knows for sure what causes nausea during pregnancy, but it’s probably some combination of the many physical changes taking place in the body.
Some say that morning sickness can be caused by a vitamin B deficiency. Taking a vitamin B6 supplement does seem to help ease nausea in some pregnant women, but this doesn’t mean they have a vitamin deficiency. In fact, at least one study has shown no significant differences in the levels of B6 in women with morning sickness and those without.
Are you looking for a morning sickness cure? Or a cure for nausea? Does the thought of getting into a car make you cringe? Are you looking for a motion sickness bracelet or motion sickness bands?
A large body of research suggests that you can reduce the nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness, morning sickness, surgery, and chemotherapy by applying pressure to points on the wrist. It may not be a morning sickness cure, but it does reduce the symptoms! PsiBand – for Motion Sickness, Pregnancy, Anesthesia & Chemotherapy Wrist Bands For Adult – 1 Pair (cherry blossom design) capitalize on accupressure concept. The bands were created by two morning sick moms in search of a more attractive solution to the typical sweatband-style motion sickness bracelets and bands. Fitness and Health tips from Pittsburgh personal trainer, life coach, and Independent Beachbody Coach, Jackie Omotalade, The First Lady of Fitness, Fashion, and Fun:
Indoor gardens are crucial to keeping you and your family healthy! A growing body of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Substituting fruits and vegetables for higher-calorie foods can be part of a weight loss strategy. However, fruits and vegetables can be expensive and many of us do not have the time nor the space to grow our own fruits and vegetables. Also, many of us do not live in climates suitable for growing year-round!
Imagine having fresh vegetable EVERY day at a fraction of the cost!
